An American practicing the heritage of Burgundy
American-born winemaker Jon Purcell arrived in Beaune in 2012 and has since worked for some of Burgundies great domaines; Domaine des Croix, Philipe Pacalet and Domaine de Montille. In 2016 Jon established his micro-domaine and estate Vin Noe and joined friends, known as the Auxey Collective, making wine in a 100-year-old cellar located in Auxey-Duresses. ‘Noe’ paying homage to a family name on his Mother’s side.
All of Jon’s eclectic experiences have influenced his winemaking, but it was his two year stretch under the tutelage of Philippe Pacalet that he truly found his winemaking style. Like Pacalet, Jon favours a combination of the more natural Beaujolais ferment (Co2 closed tank, semi carbonic and whole-cluster for everything) combined with more classic Burgundian techniques (pigeage, longer maceration, barrel aging) – the combination of which produces a rounder, more extracted style of Beaujolais. Touted as a ‘rising star’ in Beaujolais, Jon has recently expanded and is making exciting cuvees sourced from tiny parcels all around the Côte d’Or.
